Zion National Park

2009_05_28

This was our first morning in Zion. We camped in the Watchman Campground and I reserved a spot right next to the Virgin River which helped lull us to sleep that first night. I'm pretty sure we would have slepted the same had we camped next to a bus stop ;) Unfortunately we didn't plan on staying in Zion for two nights so we had to head over to the South Campground which is first come first served. We thought we scored a site when a couple of Bimmer riders were packing up but they were in a handicap spot. We continued to search and finally scored a win when an older couple from Oklahoma let me put up my marker on their post. We chatted for a bit and they recommended that we try a hike to Angel's Landing. We headed back to Watchman, decamped, and rode over to South to setup the new site. That done, we walked to town and ate breakfast at a cafe just outside the park entrance. The cafe's owner has a crazy muttly thing that was running up a vertical hillside to get a better view at some chipmunks! We take the shuttle to the trailhead and start the hike. It's hot, it's steep, and I see thunderstorm clouds. We also hear thunder and nearly turn back until Han convinces me that it's just jets flying overhead. Suuurrrre! I'm glad we pressed onward. Along the way, we meet a gal named Heather who just happens to be from California too. She's at the park with enough time to take just one hike before heading out to Sedona. It's funny how paths cross. We hike up to Angle's Landing together and had a blast. That night, Han and I went to another cafe and drank a pitcher of Wasatch Evolution Ale. Good suff! We then catch the shuttle into town and feast on a pizza and another pitcher of Evolution.
