Autry National Center of the American West

2009_08_02

I needed to go to the Giffith Observatory for extra credit in my Astronomy class but needed to kill a bunch of time so I stopped by the Autry National Center of the American West which is across the street from the LA Zoo in Griffith Park. I was starving by the time I got there so I had a buffalo burger in the museum cafe which served OK food but featured terrible staff. The woman behind the counter practically threw my order check at me while I was looking at the menu - bitch! Anyway, I didn't think much of the museum at first but it all changed after I stepped foot in the door! The feature exhibit is " Granite Frontiers: A Century of Yosemite Climbing" about men like Royal Robbins who pioneered the sport of big rock climbing in the Valley. What really got me was the development of new climbing gear and how long we've really come since those guys bivouaced in hammocks! The rest of the museum was just as interesting and worth while. Highly recommended!
